Is AI Making You Look Better or Worse?
25 August 2026
AI is making almost everyone look more capable.
People who struggled to articulate their thinking can now produce polished articles, frameworks, proposals and analysis in minutes. The floor has risen dramatically.
That is mostly a good thing. But there is a strange side effect. The same technology that makes an average expert look better can make a great expert look more average.
Not because it reduces their expertise, but because it can smooth away the things that made their thinking distinctive in the first place.
The floor has risen
For years, there was a visible difference between someone who knew their subject deeply and someone who didn’t. You could see it in the quality of the argument, the connections they made and the way they explained difficult ideas.
That gap still exists, but it is becoming harder to see. AI can now give almost anyone the surface characteristics of expertise. It can improve the prose, structure the argument, generate the framework and turn a rough thought into something polished.
When that becomes easy, polish becomes less valuable. Sounding intelligent becomes less unusual. Producing something that looks thoughtful is no longer much of a signal. And this is where things get interesting.
Great expertise is not the same as good output
Spend enough time reading AI-assisted content and you start to notice a pattern. Most of it is perfectly competent. Very little of it is memorable.
The problem is not that AI gets everything wrong. It is that it often gravitates towards the centre.
Great expertise usually lives somewhere else.
It is in the thing an expert notices that others miss. The opinion they hold that is not obvious. The question they ask before answering the one in front of them. The rule they know when to break.
It is the judgement that comes from seeing the same problem in twenty different forms.
That is what makes expertise valuable, and it is also what can disappear when an expert asks AI to do too much of the thinking. The output may improve, while the signal gets weaker.
AI doesn’t know what makes you different
AI can know an extraordinary amount about your subject. It does not automatically know what you believe about it.
It does not know which parts of conventional wisdom you disagree with, what experiences changed your mind, what mistakes shaped your approach or what you have learnt that would never appear in a textbook.
Unless you give it that context, it has little choice but to produce something closer to the average.
A sophisticated average, certainly. But still average.
That creates an odd inversion. Someone with less expertise can gain enormously because AI pulls their output upwards. Someone with much more expertise can lose something because AI pulls their output towards the middle. One moves up. The other moves inward.
The wrong question
Much of the discussion around AI still focuses on usage. Are you using it? How often? How much time does it save? For an expertise business, there is a more important question:
Is AI increasing the distance between your thinking and everyone else’s, or reducing it?
If AI helps you produce more generic content, faster, that is not necessarily progress.
The real opportunity is to give AI more of the human input that matters: your beliefs, judgement, stories, frameworks, language, standards and experience. The things that exist because you spent years doing the work. This is what we’re solving at Expert OS.
Raise the ceiling
AI is going to make competent work abundant. That means experts cannot rely on competent output to distinguish themselves anymore.
The opportunity is to use AI to make your differences clearer, not to sand them away. To make your judgement more visible, your ideas easier to access and your experience more useful beyond the hours you personally have available.
The goal is not to ask AI to think instead of you. It is to give AI more of you to think with. As AI raises the floor, the experts who matter will be the ones who keep raising the ceiling.
Keep your edge in the age of AI.
